Does it suppress the natural production if you suppliment with it?

I used to find that the stress of not sleeping was the thing that kept me up at nights. Once I decided not to really care how much sleep I had, I ended up sleeping really well.

Here are some things to consider.

1. Bed is for sleeping (and a bit of 'how's ya father') - don't hop into bed & watch tv, use laptops etc. A bit of light reading isn't bad. Your body must associate your bed with sleep.

2. Because of point 1, if you wake up during the night & can't sleep, get out of bed & do a bit of reading, watch TV, anything that isn't too stimulating (don't use your pc - especially net surfing). When you're feeling reasonably tired again go back to bed.

3. Set a time of the night that you are to go to bed - do not go to bed any earlier or take naps through the day (you'll be surprised how hard it is if you are really tired & give yourself a realistic time to go to bed - say 10 - 11pm).

4. Don't eat or drink too close to bedtime.

5. Get a good relaxation cd (I've got a few good MP3's if anyone wants to PM me)

6. Like I mentioned in a previous post - Magnesium is a great supp for the nervous system - wash them down with a chamomile tea (an hour before bed).

I used to have real problems getting to sleep (because of some meds I was on) so the Dr prescribed more meds (that I've been having a hard time withdrawing from). I've had to learn how to get to sleep 'naturally'. It took a while but with a bit of research & talking to others I no longer have a problem. I still have rough nights occasionally but who doesn't (and it's only 1 night at a time, not days at a time like previously)!

Watch out for the Kava Root if you're on antidepresants though - not a good mix.

It's been said that if your body produces a normal amount of it, you could stall your body's natural and normal production of it. Read my melatonin thread in the reviews section. It should answer your's and everyone else's question on Melatonin.

Melatonin isn't exactly the best thing out there as far as sleep aid comes.

Not a bad idea. There is always deep breathing exercises, self hypnosis relaxation (works good, very cool), yoga, Tia Chi, meditation.

Melatonin can actually worsen depression as well...Stay away from it if you are depressed...
