my question to you is this.. what formulation of glutamine?? For instance, are these studies referring to regular L-glutamine with no other compounds? There is this one glutamine product I have seen results from, but its not straight up glutamine either.. id be curious to see what particular compounds they are referring to |

Both glutamate/glutamine and aspartate and oxidized by the gut before entering the systemic circulation. This is probably a good thing because they are both excititory amino acids in the brain (at NMDA receptors)
This whole glutamine is anti-catabolic "push" in the industry is based in part on studies comparing glutamine to glycine in burn patients (who uses glycine though?) . Other studies used IV showing benefits, but then later studies using IV showed no effect. Personally I think the reason why ICU patients show a worse prognosis when glutamine levels drop has to do with falling tissue ATP levels more than anything else (synthesis of glutamine from ammonia waste is tied to ATP. So is breakdown). |
