Default effects of holding breath while doing cardio question...

I know the title sounds dumb, but here I go...

I just started swimming laps (freestyle stroke) and I am very bad at coming up for air. Specifically, I'm not very good at it as I'll swallow a bunch of water. So basically I resort to powering through the water as long as I can and maybe coming up only once for a lap.

What are the effects of this on cardio?

Holding your breath through any activity is not good,no oxygen to your system or muscles.
