Stupid, stupid exercise.
Try face pulls. People will often throw out more reps in their sets if they want to shock the body - take widow makers for instance (set's of 20 reps while squatting). If you do the same thing week in, week out, your body will adapt & then it'll become harder to make any reasonable gains. Keep shocking the body with new exercises, different rep ranges & different routines (every 8-12 weeks) & you are less likely to hit plateaus. |

Since I stopped doing shrugs, my shoulders feel much better. There was a period of time where I couldn't tackle with my right shoulder or go into tackles anymore because the pain was so bad. I cut shrugs out and a few months later I was good to go again.

You see guys loading up barbells with a few plates on each side, thinking they are strong moving 300/400/500 lbs for 2 inches of movement... it's pathetic really.
I wouldn't even say it's an ego exercise, just a dumb one. My traps didnt grow until I started deadlifting, once my deadlift got stronger and stronger, my traps got bigger. This isn't to mention the serious risk of injury this exercise has.

face pulls have you pulling from in front of you face to your face, upright rows have you pull up from hips to chin.

The thread title asks "when will it be better". It wont be necessarily "better", but everything has it's reasons and it's place in this game.
High reps are generally to aid in muscle endurance (as has been mentioned) The use of Higher reps also allows for better conditioning and fat burning. * But dont expect strength gains to the degree you will receive with low rep training and if you use it continually expect to hit a platuea alot quicker than with steady low rep training (but you shouldnt be sticking to one rep scheme continually anyways) As with everything, I tend to mix it up myself, but as for the compound stuff, the basics like bench, squat and deads, I pretty much stick the bread and butter, low reps.
