Default 8 glasses of water a day. Fact or fiction?

Varying reports today have come out in different health journals stating that there is no evidence supporting a need for 6-8 glasses of water a day. Instead, you simply need to have 4-8 glasses of fluid a day depending on diet and individual's size.

Water as a nutrient: What you need to know

Several of my professors have been calling these articles irresponsible as the benefits of drinking H2O are not testable but absolutely observable.

I agree with your professors

The average human body is normally made up of something like 70% water.
It only makes perfect common sense to replace what it loses daily, especially the more active you are.

My opinion for lifters, especially hardcore types or people who combine with cardio, you need at least 1 gallon minimum a day as a base standard.

NOW, we are speaking in terms of what is most optimal.
Anyone can get away with doing things less efficiently than required, but then again, they get less than efficient results too.
So if you want to play around and only drink 1/4 to 1/2 gallon a day and you are trying to build muscle mass, good luck.

I just looked it up, the numbers vary from 61% to 66% for the percentage of the human body that is made up of water.

Lean muscle is actually 70% water, the brain is 70% water and these are the 2 most important things I am concerned about LOL Brains and Brawn

classic.

i'm a little bit confused anyway. doesn't 6-8 glasses fall within the range of the suggested 4-8 anyway?? aren't they basically saying the same thing?

as usual, tommy has hit the nail. sure you can get away with less water but why would you? we should do what is optimal not what is minimal!

This topics pops up here often, though not usually w/ a link so good job Gill, and we all get to throw our opinions in. I drink over a gallon just sitting in my office for 8 hours. And I drink 2-3 54oz. mugs of ice water when I am at home. Is it too much? I don't know but based on the article above I fit into at least 2 categories that increase my body's use of water:

I live in SW Florida (subtropical climate)
and I work out!

To me, that supports why I drink the amount of water I do...

The distinction, Michael, is 4-8 glasses of FLUID as opposed to 6-8 glasses of WATER. Fluid refers to anything liquid (for the most part).

i heard that way too much water can kill you. something to do with are bodys cells.

Found it:"One 28-year-old woman died after the race from the condition, called hyponatremia, in which the excess water dilutes the salt level in the body too much."

Only in extreme cases though, lol.

Your body needs sodium to operate properly. The chemical membranes in your cells operate on what are called "Sodium/Potassium Pumps." Those ions, charged oppositely, open and close cell membranes allowing nutrients in and out. If you drink tons of water in one sitting, you risk diluting your body's blood so heavily that you may begin to bleed out and shut down altogether (generally starting with the brain).

Haha, in ounces. If you weigh 200, 100 ounces would be roughly two gallons.

This seems to be one of those discussions that no one will ever be able to agree on completely. Many doctors will advise people to drink tea or coffee to get enough fluids if they don't like drinking water, whereas there are also many arguments that this is counterproductive due to the diuretic effect of caffeine.

People also incorrectly believe that thirst is an indication of dehydration; if you are thirsty you are probably aready dehydrating.
