Hey all,
On Tuesday I had an operation on my heart (sent wires/catheters through leg to burn parts of an overactive/abnormal/extra circuitnode, it was far from open heart, far less severe). If you're interested its pretty much like this: YouTube - Novel therapy at UCLA fixes abnormal heart beat Without going into detail, it was totally successful and apart from some bruising at the entry point I feel great and happy to be alive. Lying on an operating table really puts things into perspective. There is a million words I can say but I won't, all in all, I am very grateful, I thank everyone involved and the health care system. To the question, when it was over, I was told to wait at least 4-5days to let the wound fully heal before working out. I'll wait 10 to be on the safe side. Later on, I was told to take one Aspirin 325 for 30 days to prevent blood clots. (I think they make everyone that had heartwork do this) So in 10 days when my wound will be a little more closed up, I'll still be on blood thinners. Is it a good idea to mix working out with blood thinners? I really don't mind waiting an extra 20 days, but if theres absolutely no harm then I will probably start lightly till I get back to my normal lifts. Note that I havent worked out in about 4 weeks just cause of mad work/exam hours and being a wuss before this operation. Last edited by ambientdeath; 12-20-2007 at 10:49 AM. |

I wouldn't worry much about lifting..
Life > bodybuilding And when you decide you want to start again.. Go light.. The muscle affected the most by weight lifting is the heart.

Thanks for your concern and kind words guys, really. <3 I've been a hippy for the past week loving life lol.
It's weird cause my problem was something I was born with and is random, everyone else there had heart-ops for other reasons like angiograms or angioplasty's and on average they are all 45+ males that are grossly overweight. It's not as bad as it sounds since they didn't open up my chest, just sent catheters through my groin and followed the vein to my heart. The doctors did say I could hit the gym after 4-5 days to let the groin heal, but that was before they told me about taking blood thinners for a month. Even though 4 days have now passed, I'm just worried that blood thinners+lifting could be unpleasant. Was wondering if anybody else is on blood thinners for any medical reason and still works out? And definitely I'd rather play it on the safe side, 1 month off the weights is a bargain if it means a healthy heart. I'm not gonna lie, I feel phenomenal, those guys are damn good. I didn't have to go fully under (which means feeling like **** for a while) plus I barely felt anything (no pain, local anesthetic on groin). It's honestly the best of both worlds. |
