Default melatonin question

I searched but couldnt find anything...

those here who take melatonin for sleep (and I know theres quite a few of you) I would like to know:

How long have you been taken it on a regular basis? Do you feel the longer your taking it the less effective it is in helping you sleep?

I've been taking it for about 6-7 months now.. Its hard to say how effective it has been.. It doesnt help me too much, it kinda sets the mood for sleep. So, if you dont relax it wont do anytihng IMO. Example, I can take 3grams, but if I'm doing HW, I wont feel it. But if I am lying down, I'll be asleep within 1 hour.

I dont think its lost any effectiveness, but I dont take it everynight, usually 3-5 times a week. I have problems getting to sleep.. Although, I feel especially tired in the morning with anything over 1gram.. Even after 8-9 hours of sleep.

All in all I'd rate it a 8/10, although, I havnt tried many other sleep aids.

It will get less effective since it will supress the actual hormone that causes you to sleep, like taking test will supress your natural production.

I took it just about every other day for a 3-4 month span and had trouble getting to sleep on my own for a few weeks after I stopped taking it.

I wouldn't make a habit of using it. There are a lot of other sleep aids that don't have the same effect as melatonin you can get through a research chem site.

I wouldn't use anything chemical for sleep - I've had bad experiences.

Learn a few relaxation techniques & take some magnesium before bed with a milk drink (protein shake).

You could start off with relaxation cds just to teach yourself how to relax - I don't have problems relaxing much now - it sounds a bit fruity but it really helps.

I've got mp3's around here somewhere if you're interested.

Study on Melatonin

I'm on the run right now but when I get a chance, I will elaborate a bit more. In essense, I wouldn't recommend it. I take a sleep complex that has helped me lots. PM me for details if you're interested.

be back later...

excellent post danny..

the way ive been using it in fear of getting immune to it is 1.5-2 months and then I take ambien for a month or few weeks...

I'd rather find something not so addictive like ambien is rumored to be (I wouldnt say I am addicted) but melatonin I would imagine, like I have read and has been stated above, can get immuned to it.

Melatonin does help me sleep greatly.

danny when you get a chance please futhur your post and give your suggestions as well as anyone else reading. I appreciate it

Cammo - I have tried the relexation tapes and sounds... Tried the eye patch thing, I do take magnesium as well and I actually warm up a glass of milk (i know im a baby lol) it doesn't seem to help by itself.

I've taken Ambien only two times but it's been awesome so far. As far as melatonin, I really can't stand it anymore. I've lowered the dosage to the point that if I lower it any more fron this point, I won't be taking any. I still wake up groggy the next morning but one thing I will admit, is that when I DO finally get up after 20 min. of trying to roll my butt off the bed, I do feel very energized like most people claim you'll feel after a "melatonin night".

Many prescribed medications have some VERY addictive properties to them. Some more than others and I'm not sure if Ambien falls into this category but for example, one prescribed med I DO know has VERY addictive properties is Zoloft. I believe Zoloft is an anti-depressant if I'm not mistaken but yes, I do agree with your mentality on trying to not getting hooked on the Ambien. I personally only take it once a week on a night that I know I'm going to be heading to bed @ about 10 or 11 PM the latest. Other than that, I supplement myself with a complex that contains a blend of valerian, chamomile, and passion flower. The serving size is 3 tabs but 2 tabs deliver 150 mg of valerian root extract, which contains a guaranteed 0.8% valerenic acid level along with chamomile and Passion Flower. I began taking it back when (about 2 months ago) every day for a while and as of now, I take it maybe 3-4 days out of the week. I had a big time problem with getting my sleep patterns back on track due to some unfortunate and self-imposed circumstances and this helped me greatly. I find myself taking it sometimes when I feel I don't even really need it but it has certainly helped me out a lot.

The warm glass of milk is actually a good idea. It's been said (and I believe scientifically proven) that a warm glass of milk helps the production of melatonin (did I get that right? Feel free to correct me anyone! )

I, myself, drink a fat glass of cold chocolate soy milk before I take my sleep complex and it does me some good. I hope this helped you virus my man.

i was watching tv one time, and a doctor was saying that a warm glass of milk doesn't scientifically do anything. its a placebo effect, because it reminds them of what there mother used to do, thus it brings them back into that state of mind. nothing wrong with a placebo as long as it doesn't cost an arm and leg ;P.

as for the addictiveness, i don't know anything about these substances. but u can fall addictive to anything, some are just more prone. some things are a physical addiction like nicotine. and some are more psychological, like bulima/eating disorders.

on a different forum, i was reading ppls reviews on a GH Biogel roller. u roll the stuff on ur forewarms and go to bed. supposed to be real good, and tones of ppl were swearing buy it. they said when they woke up, they never felt grogging, but were even waking up 20mins before they had to cause they had such a good deep sleep.

Well if it has some effect on them whether it be having them relapse of past memories or whatever it may be, that's not in essence, a placebo effect. My statement would be wrong in this case but a placebo effect would not come into play in this situation.

I agree. Addictiveness and obsession correlate with each other also. All it takes is a weak minded person and some addicitive properties and you have yourself the makings of a fiend.

I think people are becoming a little to crazed with sleep inducing/aid products. All you need is to stick to basics, no need to get all fancy with "advanced technology". Sleeping isn't such a complex thing, it's just a pattern in essence. If you feel you have a deficiency in something, get yourself checked out and find out what it is exactly you have to do to fix the problem. It's really not rocket science

Here's a bit of spam that may actually be of use.....

Free stuff too!!

Feel free to delete this post if it's against TOS - just thought it might be helpful for sleep - it'd be nice for someone to get the free trial & write up on it.

It sounds like a great product but melatonin is one of those supplements that's better off left alone.

There's plenty of reasons to not supplement it, not to mention there's better alternatives than it. Good post nonetheless, regardless of what it violates

I take up to 3g of melatonin, but the dosage all depends on how awake i am... im an insomniac and nothin seems to help, but 3g's and i wake up with a dry mouth and slightly tired, but once i get moving, im good to go and wide awake. it works for me

last night i got a OTC sleep pill from the drug store, its the active ingredient from benedryl but 50mg instead of the 10 in benadryl, 30 mins watchin tv and i was out, first full nighs sleep ive had in 2 months. if i cant get back to sleep pattern im thinkin of checkin out lunesta...anyone experience?

I have good experiences with melatonin. I dont take it regularly, but I use it every now and then when I know sleep might be difficult or i need to go to sleep earlier than usual. I usually have VERY VIVID dreams when i take it. I already dream almost every night, and remember at least one dream when i wake up in the morning. When I took melatonin my dreams became more vivid, it was weird, no nightmares or anything, just seemed very real.

Anyways, I also wouldn't take it consistently for fear of my body stopping the production of it. Good product in my opinion though.
