Yeah, Jim got it right
I was working out straight with no lay off's at all for one year.
Then I went on a vacation to the Carribean islands and I ended up taking off from lifting for like 5 weeks.
Well 5 weeks later I got back in the gym and I actually made 2 mistakes that day.
1.) Lifting too dam heavy after a 5 week lay off
2.) Doing shrugs 1st (while I was still cold) instead of last
I normally did shrugs on shoulder or back day and they were always done last.
But on my 1st day back I got the idea to do them 1st??? And I failed to warm up as I was in a rush and so I was still cold and did no warm ups and I just walked up to the rack and grabbed the biggest Dumbbells in the gym and started shrugging away....I did 3-4 sets and felt a small burning sensation, but no pain....I moved onto my other exercises and finished a whole session with no problems.
It was later that night that my left trap started burning more and hurting and tightening up on me. By the next day it was swollen enough to restrict head movement as my neck would move to swivel...the pain grew more intense and more intense and I couldnt even sleep a wink from the pain.
2 days later I ended up at the emergency room
The Diagnosis =
Internal bleeding due torn left trapezoid muscle.
But worse, it got me in a rut. I stopped lifting for 6 yrs!!!!
I think about it everytime I shrug or deadlift too.
So always warm up properly, don't be stupid, check the ego at the door or until the body is ready to accept the heavy loads and be smart by having common sense.
I train now with the same intensity, but I have learned to control the beast and do the things needed to insure my safety. This body has to be able to workout and lift when I am pushin 80 yrs old
