So fess up, do you do some good stretching during workout or just during your day, or not?

Most of the time I half ass it even in the army before pt we half ass our stretching. If I know I'm gonna have to run though I take it seriously b/c if I don't stretch before and after running my legs will cramp up or I'll get shin splints and am in pain for atleast two days. In the gym though I only stretch my quads and thats only if I'm working them that day I stretch them the whole time in between sets.

I stretch and stretch and stretch. I do a serious 15 min before hitting weights and then after my second set. I think it helps relieve the burn to get thru the last set.

I also stretch on my rest days cause Im usually stiff.

Now here a BIG reason to stetch......long muscles. At least the phylosophy I buy into. Take the thigh muscle for example I want my thighs to appear long and lean not all bunched up with bulky muscle. Stretching can also make your torso appear longer.

And finally..........................everyone should be able to touch their toes

So you are telling me that stretching is BS, so some people are just naturally flexible? While thats somewhat true, you just got lucky through your career. I knew a lot of people who never stretched and they were fine too. Stretching helps your flexibility, which means that when a bad moment comes, your muscles will be flexible enough to prevent an injury. For some people, that truly bad moment never arises. So would you tell people not to wear a seat belt, just because you were never in a car accident?

Extreme stretching is a great for say widening your lats. Just hanging for 60-90 seconds can have a great effect. Stretching though just to 'avoid' injury is BS in my humble opinion.

Example- overhead squats- your chest is stiff and not flexible. You sink into the hole, and the weight shifts backwards- you tear a shoulder/pec muscle. Its not BS, its proven scientific knowledge. Thats why every professional athlete in the world stretches.

I agree it increases elasticity which reduces the likelihood of you pulling a muscle. That said I'll stretch for a couple of mins before a workout and if I can be arsed, afterwards too.

The 'extreme lat stretches' sound good, I'll give it a go

So having full ROM in a joint isn't needed in lifting?

Thats the purpose of stretching, to increase the ROM for a joint as much as possible before exercise, this reduces risk of injury. Other benefits like increased blood flow are just a plus.

Warm up sets are enough for weight training, if your running then go ahead and stretch like a cat.
