Default Protein requirements per day?

I was told by a certified personal trainer at the loval YMCA today that the amount of protein a person needs perday IS NOT 1-1.2grams per pound. Infact, he says, you need to convert your pound weight into kilograms then multiple that by 0.8 and 1.2 to get your proper protein requirement range per day.

Example: 175lbs / 2.2 = 79.54kg

79.54kg X 0.8 = 63.632grams

79.54 X 1.2 = 95.44

So may protein need per day is a range of 64-95grams a day and NOT 175grams a day. Also that I high protein intake daily can lead to renal problems. Can anyone comment of this please at to which is correct, since I always read its 1g per pound?

Haha....that would suck if that was true

But as far as intake, I take in as much as my body weight and then some... I weigh 152lbs, so to make me happy I take in 200+...I could take in from 152+....yup

An athlete needs more protein than a sedentary person. In many books all daily protein intake for a normal individual is 100g or less. But that is just for a regular person who does not train to gain and mantain its muscle mass.
Athlete in general need around 150-350g a day depending on the activity and level of performance to maintain strength, muscle and power.
A good number to keep at all times is 200g/day of protein intake per day.
If you think that the YMCA guy is right then try his advice and see what rezults you are getting. I will be interested to know.
I think this guy is right in the book sense but not reality!

1-1.5g of protein/lb of lean muscle mass is what I usually go by. So say I weigh 210lbs and am approx 15% body fat that means I have 178lbs of lean muscle and my daily protein intake lies somewhere between 180 and 270g per day. I usually get closer to the higher range on workouts days (eat more overall calories on these days) and the lower range on non workout days.

Man...eat as much protein as you can! If you really want to grow and you train really hard you can eat truckloads of protein. As for the renal problems...that is a myth. If it were true half the people on this board would be on kidney dialysis...just to be safe you should drink 1-2 gallons of water a day (not to mention the laundry list of health benefits of adequate water intake). Drinking a whole lot of water daily can help prevent a host kidney conditions...

YMCA....let me see if I can make use of the acronym a little better
You May Call it A knowledge...I did a little bit of an ad lib there but hey close enough. I will forgive that trainer; though he did mislead you in a path to skindom. Protein intake is essential and to take 1-1.5 g a day would benefit somebody if they were trying to fit in a dress or a basket. someone probably already said it: take your lean body weight and multiply by 1-1.5 the result should be your protein intake per day>>>>Goodluck
