Question good squatting technique

After a period of inactivity I've started training again. I joined a local gym a couple of months ago, but it isn’t a ‘hardcore’ gym by any stretch of the imagination – it’s all machines and dumbbells, no barbells.
Anyway, here’s the thing: I’m doing squats using dumbbells and I’m wondering whether I should hold them in a bent-arm, knuckles-to-the-ceiling stance – as if I were really holding a barbell – or if I should let my arms hang by my sides?

I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so what I’m thinking about here is best technique, maximum benefit and of course lowest risk of injury.

Oh, and this same question also applies to when I’m doing lunges.
Thanks!

you should be fine doing them with your arms down, if your going atg that may be difficult though, depends on the length of your arms for if the weights hit the floor
