5x5 is a solid program, once you figure where your proper weights are. You should need some help on the last set if you are doing it right.

Default 5x5

the way i read the 5x5 is you work up to your 5th set.

example:say deadlift 5 rep max is 315

then you would go 5x225,5x250,5x275,5x300,5x315

is this correct?

That's the traditional 5x5. Boyd has finally gotten through to me about pyramidding though (although I imagine with the 5x5 it is OK). I tend to do 5x5 with one weight (after warmups), for example on flat bench I do 5x5 @ 225. No wasted energy on lighter sets.

i hear where your coming from joe but this is not a principle of the 5x5.

i would think over time ,lifting like that 5x5 of your max reps, would take its toll on your ligaments, joints, and tendons. and if your getting 5 reps for 5 sets of your max ,is your 5 rep max really being acclomplished? also, bill star says that this could lead to overtraining.

i would like other opions on this so please chime in! this is only an opion and would like different ones.

It's not really a 5 rep max ( I can get 225x10). I could go up, say like 245x5, but I've been slacking lately and can't get more than a couple sets at 245. I stick with the 225 to get plenty of volume. I've pretty much been doing this since last winter and haven't noticed any OT problems. YMMV.

i think that is where ramping up would help you out.
every week you could add 5 pounds to your 5 rep max.

in a months time you could possibly add 10-20 pounds to your 5 rep max.

get what im saying?

Yes I do, I've read up on the traditional 5x5 a good bit. Most folks seem to get some nice increases after 4-6 weeks. I'll stick with what I'm currenlty doing until I can get a more solid lifting schedule going. I'm currently having a hard time getting to the gym because life, as we all know, can get crazy sometimes.

250 mgs was easy and really had no problem.

when i shot 500, sometimes i would get a lump half the size of my ass.
i believe it was the build up of oil that did this. hot baths and a heating pad took care of it.

i only shot 250 at the beginning of my cycle to see if i was going to have any problems.(allergies)

what type of ester r u running?

Try HST instead. Its designed to get your joints up to par and you still hit 5's at the end of each mesocycle.

Now that I've finally got my HST routine nailed down, I don't think I'll ever work out in a non-HST fashion again.

Hypertrophy-Specific Training : : Official Home of HST

It's a lot to read, but once you "get it", and do your first cycle, you'll be in love!
