They weren't running on water, just the hydrogen gas.
What people don't understand is there is a loss of energy. This isn't just free energy here. It takes MORE energy to separate the hydrogen molecules from the water than it does to use it for fuel. So if we start using massive amount of energy to make this gas, guess what, we are still stuck using a crapton of energy to move our lazy asses somewhere. It's not nearly as green as people think, especially when the energy for making the gas comes from power plants burning coal and oil.
Just buy a freakin roadbike, and save the car for long trips. There, I just saved you tons of money. I have ridden my bike everywhere for 3 years now, and after driving my car to work this summer, just now realize how much paying for gas sucks.
