Wee - good points. Alot of folks out there think the Pres makes alot more of a difference than he really does. Without Congress (House AND Senate) - nothing gets done. And - over the last 20 years (Bush 1, Clinton and Bush 2) not alot has been done. That is with both parties having the majority at one point or another in the House. However, you can bet that they get their payraise bill passed on time every year.
If people paid more attention as to who they elect to represent them locally at the national level, things would be better. I'm one of those wingnuts who actually write letters (electronic) to the FL Senators and House Reps from my district when they vote for or against something I don't like or if it appears that they voted that way simply according to party lines, etc. I'm actually surprised when I get a response that isn't from an intern, but it does happen. Twice I've gotten an actual letter in the mail hand-signed - both from the same Rep.
If the President had line-item veto capability however, he'd be ALOT more powerful.
