If you want to compete, then you should start with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. That is extremely hard to learn and become proficient. It will take years of dedication to become dangerous. As for the Muay Thai, you could study that art for 6 months and be ready to compete, especially if you have a great ground game. Most fights are won or lost on the ground.

I would take some Judo classes as well. I love watching those guys get thrown on their heads.
