Default Why democracies fail?

i read this on the internet today and found it very interesting. there is some debate over who actually said it but i dont think that really matters all that much.

"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship"

i think this is very true and more and more voters in the US are discovering that they can do preciesly what it says, vote for candidates who promise them free benefits.

while i do believe that democracy is the best system of government ever devised it is true that democracy undermines freedom when voters believe they can live off of others' productivity.
