Even with a straight forward diagnosis of hypothyroid most patients road to some semblance of recovery is a bit rocky. Usually because hypothyroid was the last thing they or their doctor suspected and tested for...and by that time they are terribly overweight and now suffering from a host of other problems.
In my case things have been complicated by a few other problems:
-Fibromyalgia
-Lactose intolerance
-Gluten intolerance
-Medicine sensitivities...
-and...to add another curve...there is a good chance I'm now insulin resistant.
...Oh! Did I mention that there are also a bunch of veggies and fruits that are 'goitrogenic' (sp)...meaning that they slow the thyroid down, that I love to eat that I should now avoid?
Yeah....you should see my diet now...
Want to talk about having a bad day...oy!
The good news is:
-I have been 'on top' of that fibro biatch for a while now...
-I had recognized my lactose intolerance and adjusted my diet accordingly...
-I had just realized I was gluten intolerant and was adjusting my diet accordingly...
-I've figured out that my levothyroxine 'script is not working and will be calling Kim back this week...
-And I'm now adjusting to the possibility of being insulin resistant.
The other good news is:
-I still train 2-3 hours (in 30-60 minute increments though out the day) 5-6 days a week, with three nights being specifically in the kwoon...yes...you heard that right. (I really love my ma training.)
-I still lift (when I'm not so exhausted that I'm worried I'll hurt myself.)
-I still do cardio 30 minutes 3+ days a week...
-I still stretch (yoga/pilates) almost daily...
-When I'm not sleepy due to the hormone imbalance that we haven't quite got right...I'm constantly in motion.
-My diet is still 'tight' and has in fact gotten tighter
-The 5 pounds I gained during the three weeks I 'relaxed' my diet while I was with my family over the holidays is off...as well as an additional pound.
-I'm still a fairly lean 40-something female, but the battle is getting harder at this point to keep lean. (I cannot wait to get back on the trails 3 or more days a week for my 10-20 mile days...spoken 'tongue-in-cheek'.)
So let's put it this way...when Kim said, "Amy, your weight has hardly changed.." the second time. And after I nodded numbly, because I knew that to her (and a lot of other people) I did/do look great and I am at a very acceptable weight and fitness level for my age. I looked her in the eye and said, "Kim, for all the training that I do, and for as careful as I am with my diet...I should be 15 pounds less than what I am...
at the very least."
And for the first time in my life...I finally understand why some people just 'give up' and 'let nature take its course' with their bodies...when it comes to weight gain.
But, I have never been one to just give up. I am a scrapin', fightin', determined little thing if ever there was one. I just have never been a quitter...even when I've had the hellz beaten outta me.
So...in the posts that follow. I'm going to introduce you to hypothyroid disorder. Unfortunately at this point I won't be here daily...so the information is going to be added when I have time. My sis needs me and when she doesn't need me and I'm not training...I'm resting until we get my thyroid balanced out and 'functioning' correctly again.
If you have questions that I haven't gotten around to answering yet as I walk through this battle...feel free to PM me. I'll get back to you as soon as I can at the very least with some helpful links if I don't have time to type up a detailed answer.
Hopefully by the time I've posted up what I've learned about my condition I'll be back on my feet and kicking a$$ in the gym (Instead of lifting like a timid little grannie...well okay, I'm a grandma, but I'm not usually timid by any means!). And dayum...I have a test for my next sash coming up! I have got to be my best for that!
