You asked about doing stiff leg style, here is my experience with it.
I did deadlifts for a few months before even thinking about stiff leg deads. Once I hit the 3 plate mark on deads (315lbs), I started doing the stiff leg style. I figured by then my lower back was definately strong enough to take the weight of stiff leg style on its own, so I started out light with them and now I am doing stiff leg deads at about 175lbs and I feel like there is still more strength left for me to move up higher with them. I would say use standard deads for a while to get your back used to the idea of lifting weight and then move on to the stiff leg deads later. No need to rush into it.
