You should definitely feel it in your lower back more if your form is good. What type of injury to your lower back do you have? I know that you want to start out with lighter weight...but do you think 85 lbs might be too light? It could be that the weight is not difficult enough so you don't feel it in your lower back, more in your legs just because of the different movement/position that you are not used to.
I dunno.
Stiff-legged would be for leg day IMO-hamstring exercise.
