It will get less effective since it will supress the actual hormone that causes you to sleep, like taking test will supress your natural production.
I took it just about every other day for a 3-4 month span and had trouble getting to sleep on my own for a few weeks after I stopped taking it.
I wouldn't make a habit of using it. There are a lot of other sleep aids that don't have the same effect as melatonin you can get through a research chem site.
