Dextrose serves well postwork out because it's a fast digested carbohydrate. It also acts as against cortisol. It also produces an insulin spike so you can better absorb all the nutrients into muscle tissue, and replenish your muscle glycogen storage you lose when you workout.
You don't HAVE to take dextrose but a dextrose/maltrodextrin blend PWO has been proven optimal.
I myself take Gatorade & Whey PWO.
