Knee problems
Active people may experience knee pain as they age. One risk factor is being heavy. As the knees accumulate injury in the form of damage to the tendons the bones begin to rub against each other, causing that familiar pain you described.
I agree that choosing an elliptical is a good solution because it allows you to remain active and has low impact on the knees. Swimming is another alternative. Unfortunately, the problem will only get worse if you keep runnning. Knee replacement surgery is an option, but is not recommended until as late as possible in life because it has it's disadvantages. You want to get as much use out of your natural knees as you can.
Advil will not prevent the damage you are doing to your knees. You are also stressing out your kidneys by taking this much, although the max is 3.2g/day. Instead, prevent the pain from occuring in the first place.
