A Cross trainer (eliptical) is pretty good for people with knee problems.
I get slight pain in my left knee now and then from catillage damage so I steer well clear of treadmill.
If your dosing up on pain killers just to get through your cardio, your probably doing more damage.
It may be really impractical but have you considered swimming?
Lately it's all i've been doing for cardio and it's really energising.
