Well the diet is surely the most important thing for any kind of progress...But I don't understand why you want to lose weight when you are at 177 pounds and want to start building muscles. You build the best muscles when you have a little extra reserve. The best way is to eat a lot of protein/carb and workout 4 days a week where you are training the whole body every time.
