Would getting help from a certified trainer (weekly if I can afford it) be worth it?
Now: I've been going to gyms since '97. I've remained in decent shape but for some reason want to move up several levels. (I dunno, maybe some older thing now that I'm 49??) I am a member at a very good gym here in Albany for the past 3 years & last night asked for help doing crunches using the ball. I've never had a trainer before and this woman has a degree in biochemisrty as well -she's good & smart. I'm not!, when it comes to body science. Old Timers Please Keep Reading! Lastly: I've been reading posts about the forum not being as popular now as before. Well, I'm not going anywhere because I want the help, but more important - I realize that I don't know much. If I did, I wouldn't be in the same shape that I've been in the last 12+ years. You see, I don't think most people understand how "ignorant" they are when it comes to lifting....well I do, finally! Most people now, are probably like I was, that if they "work out" they are doing it right, yet within some time they don't see any real results & quit or they just want to stay at the level they are & that's ok too, any exercise is better than none! Really Lastly: I believe that things are changing again! The past sveral years the country has gotten Fat, Lazy & TV/Video Crazy. That will change & it already is... I see more people, young & old exercising & watching what they eat. That's the start! Eventually more will be interested in the science of all this...that's where forums like this will help..seems to me you guys know this stuff...& folks like me are starting to realize it. |

i got certified through ACE. they are one of the better ones here.
Getting certified gives me an understanding of why some personal trainers do what they do and it also gave me a great base on alot of different subjects from a+p to cardiovascular training to fitness testing.

Hi Dave,
Then one thing that I think is the most important is to keep records of your routine. Keep track of your food intake, how that impacts your goals and the intensity in the gym. Most people fail because they do not know from day to day how much food they eat. If that's the case the rest like exercise will either be in vein or not delivering the right results. Second, make small goal for yourself every month and try to accomplish that. For example losing 1 lb a week can be 52lbs a year! I mean simple stuff like this.

Yea, for sure.... I have this kid at work who wants to put on weight and when I asked what he eats from day to day he ranted some random foods ..lol
Sat down with him for few min gave him some inputs and the kid is up 2-3 lbs now in a matter of few weeks...he couldn't believe it. he said that he had such hard time gaining weight....and I said really... Now he keeps a little journal

Some are worth their weight in gold. The majority I wouldnt even take free advice from. If you can get a hold of one of the good ones, i think it would be worth your time and money.
