Default Bodybuilding and Diabetes

Just ran across your web page today. Very enlightening. I was a pretty successful club bodybuilder from 2000-2003 until I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Really threw me into a loop and a rut. I got very depressed and left the weights behind me. How could my body do this to me. Really bummed me out ..... until recently. Had some troubles with the T2D meds, but finally got my blood sugar levels under control. I fell pretty good. Now, I'm ready to get back into the gym. I talked it over with my Dr and he's all for it. I used to take allot of supplements (most of the ones you mention in your guide). Have you had an opportunity to deal with bodybuilding and T2D? I have a goal, as lofty as it my sound, but I want to get back into competing again. I'm 49, 6'1" and right now at 225. When I was in the gym, I was at (my best) 13% BF. I read and re-read your nutrition section. Can you share with me some of your experiences (if any) working with T2D lifters.....Thanks

Thankfully, I don't have to deal with T2D (although it runs in my family), but I just wanted to say "congratulataions" for getting back into the gym. Getting your weight and BF% down will undoubtedly help. If I can ask, what was your weight when your BF was 13%? What are your goals now? Although some of the younger guys on here might not be happy with 13% BF, if you could get that low at age 49 you'd be in fantastic shape for your age.

Best of luck.

Having recently been diagnosed with T2 (June)I can empathise with what you've been through. I was placed on 2000 mgs of metformin per day which made me feel like crap however it was neccessary to get my blood sugar regulated. I also made drastic changes in what I was eating (i.e much lower carbs, little or no sugar). I wasn't able to train for awhile because of how I was feeling. I have since gotten back to training but have changed my focus. I've gotten leaner and am pretty happy with the way I look at this point though how I feel is much more important now. I have been told that once you adapt to the fact that your life is forever changed you can still accomplish what you want It just might be a little harder or take a little longer, go for it.
