Yes, we do need to love and not hate. Keep in mind, though, that marriage is not a religious institution - there are secular marriages, and every religion has its own marriage preceedings and definition of marriage. To outlaw gay marriage as defined by Christianity for all marriages is tyranny, because Buddhists and Unitarian Universalists don't view gay marriage in the same way, so should the Christian view be forced down their throats?
