Working out with Dr. Atkins

Hey Meatheads and fellow Meathead wanna-bes, A buddy of mine recently went from 240# down to 185# thanks to Dr. Atkins Low Carb plan. Now he wants to get solid. We've been working out for about 3-4 months together. I've seen some gains in both strength and appearance, but he can't seem to go up in weight at all (as in he can't seem to get any stronger). He is still doing the low carb thing, so I'm 90% sure he's getting all the protein he needs. We don't over do cardio (if we do it at all). Can peeps get gains while on the Atkins Low Carb plan? Are Carbs an essential part of training? He has enough energy to finish the workouts...Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in Advance, -Tha Rookie

Hi Rookie, it's my opinion that carbs are needed to fuel the body. It's a question of how much depending on the intensity/duration of your workout. Others on this forum might have different opinions.

carbs are an essential ingredient if you're trying to put on size. try to eat 2-3 g per lb is what I've read in most places. Low carb diets are for cutting, not gaining.

load up on carbs especially post workout....a good way for me is to mix gatorade with my post whey shake.....You say hes getting all the protein he needs in his diet, but is it the right protein? IMO he still needs to consume at least 2 shakes a day.....and also supplement with some creatine, micronized powder not liquid. 20 grms a day for first 5 days then 5-10 grms a day after that.

Hey Ripped, have you had any side effects using higher dosages of Creatine. I saw a program some time ago where this high school football player claimed he got kidney stones from his usage of creatine. I've been taking creatine for 10 weeks with 2.5 week off. I'm back on again but taking only 5 gms./day. Should I bump that up to 10 gms./day? Thanks

But why are carbs so important? Everybody raves about how important protein is, but why are carbs important? I don't understand what's preventing him from getting gains without carbs... Where do carbs fit into the work out program of somebody who has enough energy to finish each workout? I guess I'm looking for more of a scientific approach rather than just a blanket statement of 'Carbs are important' Thanks again, -Rookmiester

Carbohydrate is a compound that contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. They are known to us as sugars, starches, and dietary fiber. Carbohydrates yield on an average about 4 kcal (kilocalories) per gram. For instance; if you eat a food that has 20g of carbohydrates in it, you are getting 80 kcal. Take 4 x 20. A kcal, or kilocalorie is the heat needed to raise the temperature of 1000 grams (1 liter) of water 1 degree Celsius, or 4 cups of water by 2 degrees Fahrenheit. Carbohydrates are one of our main sources of fuel. Without carbs in your body right now, you would probably be walking around like a zombie; that is if you can even walk. Our brain requires carbs to function, and our muscles require carbs to support intense physical activity, such as bodybuilding. Getting enough carbs throughout the day is very important, as the liver glycogen is used up in about 18hrs when carbs aren't consumed. Glycogen is a white, tasteless polysaccharide (C6H1005)n. Glycogen serves as an energy reservoir, being broken down to glucose when needed. Now you are probably thinking, who cares! Here is why you need to know this. If you don't get enough carbs, the body is then forced to produce carbs from protein. And all of us know, we need protein to build muscles. So the point is, if you aren't eating enough carbs, you might as well kiss that protein good by. The two different forms of carbs are the simple carbs, and complex carbs. The simple carbs are called sugars, and the complex carbs are called starches. Approximately half is represented by starch; another third by table sugar (sucrose) and milk sugar (lactose); and smaller percentages by monosaccharides such as glucose and fructose, which are common in fruits, honey, and syrups. The small remainder consists of bulk, or indigestible carbohydrate (fiber), which comprises primarily the outer covering of seeds and the stalks and leaves of vegetables. If you are confused about all of this mumbo jumbo, don't worry. Just remember this. 1. 50% of our energy comes from carbs. 2. Carbs have a protein sparing effect. 3. There are simple, and complex carbs. 4. Carbs yield 4 kcal per gram.
