Deadlift advice

Hey guys,

I really liked the idea of doin deadlifts, ya no the whole GH boost and all, so I tried some out tonite.

Just wondering if I was doin them rite. I stood with my legs slightly wider than shoulder breadth, with a bar close to my shins. I bent at the knees, keeping my back and head up till i held the bar(arms outside of legs), then lifted from the legs up. That sound ok? I felt it most on the lower back muscles and my hamstrings, that where i should be feelin it most?

I'm gonna get some wrist straps cos my hands are killing me liftin that bar!

Cheers

That sounds right. Don't use wrist straps though, let your hands get stronger!

actually, I would use straps at the end of your set if you go heavy enough to where your grip breaks before your muscles are fatigued.  typically when I deadlift, I'll only use straps in my last set.

Yah, that sounds about right  Make sure you're nicely warmed up tho.

I do a few sets of warmups and then go straight to a heavy load with straps.

I had a buddy back in university who worked out with me quite often, he could never the form correct for some reason...

make sure your form is spot on before going really heavy, I won't go above 315 with them because I'm not certain my form is good.  but once I'm comfortable with my form it'll be balls to the wall

Hey guys,

I got some wrist straps today, so with luck i'll be able to do some real heavy deadlifts at the start of the week. My arse and legs are still sore from my leg session at the start of the week

One thing, how the hell do the straps work? I'm guessin i feed one end thru the loop then pull it tight round the wrist, then wrap the over end round the bar? That sound rite? I'll try it out with a light weight tomoro.

Yeah, u just feed the normal end thru the loop, and then put it around your wrist with the long part on your palm.

then wrap it around the bar... initially you might find it weird trying to get a good grip without the straps slipping, after you get used to it, it won't slip at all.

But don't use it for light weights. only for heavy sets

be sure that you wrap the strap around the bar the opposite way that your hand will be closing around the bar, or else they don't work.  for instance, if you're doing say shrugs w/ an overhand grip, imagine wrap the strap around the bar like it is an underhand grip, or else they won't work very well.

Hey guys, thanks for the advice on the straps.

Another question bout the deadlifts, how many should u do in a set? Do you lift, drop and stand up again before a new rep, or do u always keep hold of the bar?

Hey, yeah! I find deadlifts to be the most draining exercise more than anything else. which is one of the reasons I alternate it with squats days, never in the same week. hehehe....
